Frequently Asked Questions

We are often asked question about our  challenge when we are out and about on visits or just chatting with friends.

Here we answer some of the most common questions we get asked.

  • When did you start the challenge and when do you hope to finish?
We started on 1st June 2024 and hope to complete the challenge in 2 years. We wanted a nice round figure to start so what better than the half way point in 2024 We are reliant on annual leave as we both work so we hope to finish midway through 2026, hopefully sooner.
  • Why did you decide to start this challenge?
Our personal interest in the RNL goes back a long way. Having watched "Saving Lives at Sea", Allan woke up one morning as said when he retired he would like to visit all the lifeboat stations. Helen said "why wait, let's do it now" We then decided to make it a fundraiser.
  • What is your aim on this Challenge?
Our sole primary aim is to raise money for this amazing charity. From a personal point of view it allows us to see some amazing parts of the UK and Ireland that we perhaps wouldn't think about visiting otherwise. At each Lifeboat Station we visit we aim to take a photograph of one or both of us with our two RNLI bears against the name of the station.
  • Do you have any family connections with the RNLI?
Helen's Grandfather served in the Merchant Navy during the war and he support the RNLI all of his life. Unfortunately he is no longer with us and we do not know if he had to use their lifesaving skills during his service. Allan has no family links, but has an interest since a small child and visited stations with his parents whenever on holiday. He also made a small wooden lifeboat with his grandad and he still has this.
  • How much money do you hope to raise for the RNLI?
We have set our initial JustGiving target at £2380, that's £10 per station. We hope we can achieve this and even go on to double that. Every single donation no matter how large or small goes directly to the RNLI to support the heroes saving lives at sea. You can donate directly from this website by clicking on the Donate button at the top of the page
  • How are you travelling to each Lifeboat Station?
We are travelling by car. Sadly no extreme attempts such as walking, running or swimming from us. However, the most challenging parts will be where the mode of transport involves aircraft. Helen hates flying!!
  • Where are you most looking forward to visiting?
Allan is most looking forward to the Hebrides and northern isles of Scotland Helen loves Ireland especially along the west coast. However, there are beautiful coastlines right on our doorstep and every visit so far has been amazing.
